Adding new titles
If you know movies or TV series that are not on the database yet - please send me an info on twitter.
Themes are selected on a basis of "Prevailing theme". It means that 70% or more of the action in the movie is relevant to the chosen theme. in example if action takes place underwater and the plot is about submarine this title will go to an "Underwater" theme.
Robots, Mecha ("Giant robots" in previous version), Cyborgs, Replicants ("Androids" in previous version)
Those themes looks very similar. Robots - mechanical creations made from metal that looks like machines and acts on its own. Mecha - same thing, but piloted by humans. Cyborgs are robots that disguise them self as a living humans. Replicants - artificial humans created via genetic engineering or cloning. Cyborg is actually a robot and an android/replicant at the same time, that is why they have their own group.
Computers, Virtual reality.
Computers are more about machines themselves, servers, software and artificial intelligence. Virtual Reality is more about virtual worlds and action inside them.
Spaceship Crew
The main story is about one ship and its crew. The whole universe revolves around that particular ship and crew. Good examples are “Star Trek”, “Andromeda”, etc.
Space Saga
Events on a much larger scale than a one ship or a one planet - politics, diplomacy, intergalactic wars, major conflicts. A lot of action on different planets, with different groups of people or aliens. A good example is the “Star Wars” series, also the “Babylon 5” and the “Expansion”.
Xenomorph, Monster, Giant Monster, Dinosaurs
Another complex section. Xenomorph - an alien or a creature, which morphs with a human by entering a human body and evolving, changing, controlling it. Monsters - any kind of scary creatures, which are not humanoids. Could be animals, insects or biological mutants. Giant monsters - same thing, but much bigger. Dinosaurs - extinct creatures based on natural history.
Virus and Zombies
Everything that revolves around disease, viruses, biological weapons, experiments and infestation. including zombie apocalypse
Post apocalypse and Desert warriors
Everything that happens during or after an apocalyptic event such as mass extinction, nuclear war, sudden climate change. Desert Warriors is a standalone group of titles that looks like “Mad Max” – all action is taking place in a desert-like conditions.
Time travel and Interdimentional
When you travel to another time or place. Everything connected to time machines, portals. Interdimensional – traveling to another dimension. Also teleportation and travel through wormholes.
Invisibility
Invisible man, genetic experiments, physics, special suits or sets of armor.
Survival
Titles about survival, where characters are lost on a distant planet or put in a situation when they must survive harsh conditions.
Exploration
Titles about interstellar exploration, expeditions and missions in a local space. First landing on alien worlds, first steps, first contacts.
Expansion
Human expansion into space, meeting alien races, fighting for domination
Police and Order
Titles about police force and prison system in the future about about society and order.
Catastrophe
Catastrophic events that leads to extinction or planet destruction.
Alien Invasion
Movies, TV series and cartoons about an Alien Invasion and repelling that invasion. Hordes of aliens, flying saucers, reptilians, indoctrination, shadow government. War of the Worlds is a god example here.
Expansion
Human expansion into space, meeting alien races, fighting for domination. Close to Alien Invasion but more about humans fighting aliens on other planetes or in a deep space. Fighting on more or less equal terms.
General Sci-Fi
Titles with general sci-fi stories. Mostly TV Series that contain a lot of different stories like Twilight Zone, out of the unknown and similar titles.
Underwater
All action is taking place underwater in domes, submarines, stations, etc.
There are 360p, 720p, 1080p marks.
Ratings or "Value" are defind by my personal opinion, based on the title's value to the sci-fi in general and to a particular theme. Sometimes "value" is not about good or bad movie - it's more about is there anything to see in 1080p quality there or not.
Meta Critics ratings were taken when particular title was added to the DB. They are a static (no updates) and maybe inaccurate. Also those ratigs are not available for all titles.
Sometime in the future there will be user rating system implemented.
For titles that I have seen personaly
Action
The films are rife with enemy fights, gunfights, explosions and violence punctuated by stunts and visual effects, explosions and disasters. The action takes up most of the screen time.
Adventure
Titles that include traveling from one point to another, overcoming the difficulties of the path, encounters with the enemy or with the forces of nature. Action is an integral part of the adventure, but takes up a small part of the screen time.
Horror
Using fear as a means to entertain the viewer by creating scary, exciting situations of uncertainty, suspense, constant expectation and horror. These films often use both psychological and visual techniques.
Thriller
Creating an atmosphere of constant expectation of the inevitable and the impossibility of salvation. It differs from horror films in that we practically do not see the source of danger on the screen.
Comedy
Comedy films filled with funny, absurd situations or events.
Drama
The narrative is often philosophical, life history, investigations of incidents or crimes. Conflict and a big emotional component.
Documentary
Documentaries, educational and popular science films. Additional materials and bonus content. Movies about making movies and games. Deleted scenes.
Some specifics for showing information about creators on a title page.
Authors
I've tried to use original authors - the persons who actually wrote the book or novel. However, in some cases "Author" means "Creator". That's particulary true for the most of the TV Series.
Directors
In some cases, there two or more directors for one title. Due to the lack of time, not all of them are present in the Database. For TV Series I've used the "Initial" director - who actually started the series, or, in some cases, the director who shot the most episodes.
Titles are grouped and organized by their main theme and marked with the same color so you can easialy distinguish them. Read the FAQ section to understand how themes are selected.
